1st week


Subject, goals and main trends in Biological chemistry. Chemical components of living organism. Amino-Acids - as components of protein molecules. Structural and functional diversity of proteins. Physical-chemical properties of protein.

Control test: Background knowledge of organic chemistry.

2nd week


Domen structure of proteins. Notion of shaperons. Methods for classification of protein. Specificity of structure of connective tissue proteins


3rd week


Chemistry of conjugated (complex) proteins. Specificity of structure and biological activity of different kinds of complex proteins.

Color reactions used for identification of proteins and amino acids.

Protein precipitation reactions

Dialysis of protein. Paper chromatography of amino acids.


4th week


Chemistry of Nucleic Acids. Chemical structure and biological role


Quantitative determination of protein. Construction of calibration curves.

Seminar: “Proteins and nucleic acids. Purification and isolation of proteins”


5th week


Principles of catalysis: enzymes and ribozymes. Notion on activation energy and transition state of chemical reactions. Enzyme-substrate complexes. Dependence of the rate of enzymatic reactions from pH, temperature and substrate and enzyme concentration.

Effect of amylase on starch. Influence of temperature on amylase activity. Determination of alkaline phosphatase activity

6th week


Classification and nomenclature of enzymes. Isoenzymes. Immobilized enzymes. Determination of enzyme activity. Synthesis and degradation of enzymes. Enzymes inhibitors.


Colloquium №1. “Amino acids and simple proteins, complex proteins. Nucleic acids and enzymes

7th week


Coenzymes - derivatives of vitamins. Functional role of coenzymes. Causes of hypovitaminosis. Chemistry of lipids. Classification and biological functions. Construction and functions of biomembranes

Seminar; Title: Vitamins.

Quantitative determination of vitamin C in potatoes, and vitamin P in tea

8th week


Hormones - the coordinators of biochemical processes. Coordination of Endocrine tissues. Chemical structure of hormones.


Seminar; Title: Lipids. Spectrophotometric determination of NADH and calculation of purity of commercial preparation

9th week


Hormone-receptor interactions. Intracellular messengers. Molecular mechanisms of signal transduction.


Hormones. Mechanism of action.

10th week


Introduction to metabolism in living organism. Notion on metabolism and main metabolic pathways. Essential components of nutrition. Individual features and disturbances of metabolism. Self-learning

Effect of hormones on glucose concentration in blood. Seminar: “Hormones”

11th week


Principles of bioenergetics processes. ATP - as universal donator of free energy. The pathways of ATP synthesis: substrate and oxidative phosphorylation. Biological oxidation. Transport of electrons and protons across respiratory chain in inner mitochondrial membranes. Chemiosmotic theory of Mitchell.

Colloquium №2. “Vitamins, hormones, lipids”

12th week


Carbohydrate metabolism. The possible pathways of glucose phosphate degradation. Anaerobic oxidation of glucose and glycogen, their regulation and energetic yield. Specificity of carbohydrate metabolism in muscle and liver. Cori cycle.


Seminar: Chemistry of carbohydrates. Biological role of carbohydrates.

13th week


Gluconeogenesis. Aerobic metabolism of carbohydrates. Pasteur effect. Oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate. Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle – CAC) and its connection with biological oxidation. Regulation of glucose aerobic oxidation and its energetic yield.

Specificity of amylase and sucrose action. Seminar; title: “The carbohydrate role in metabolism; accumulation of energy”

14th week


Pentose phosphate pathways of glucose oxidation in different tissues.


Quantitative determination of glucose in blood. Construction of sugar curves

15th week


Hormonal regulation of glycogen degradation and synthesis. The diseases of glycogen accumulation. Disturbances of carbohydrate metabolism. Diabetes mellitus. Biological role of substrates cycles.

Quantitative determination of pyruvate in urine.

16th week


Eicosanoids: prostaglandins, prostaciclins, leucotriens, thromboxanes: biosynthesis, metabolism, biological effects. Inhibitors of prostaglandin and thromboxane synthesis. Notion on cytokines and formation of molecular immunology
